Radio Afrique presents the Los Angeles debut of Marcelo Machado’s Tropicalia on Sunday, September 28th at the historic Velaslavasay Panorama.

Tropicalia tells the story of the artistic and cultural movement born in the late 1960s in Brazil. From a collective of like-minded souls, “Tropicalia” used music, poetry, and avant-garde visual art, to confront the cultural and political establishment. Headed by musicians Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, the Tropicalist movement had a big impact on the popular music scene, and was an intense presence in Brazilian television, press and radio.

The “Tropicalistas” created pop songs, mixing traditional Brazilian folk music with psychedelic pop – creating a sound never heard before. The movement has since inspired and influenced many high profile musicians including David Byrne, Damon Albarn and Beck.

The scene and its key players are explored through an affectionate panorama built up from interviews, unseen footage, images and songs in Marcelo Machado’s fascinating new film Tropicalia.

Following the Los Angeles screening will be a private after party hosted by Radio Afrique including live music and an intimate Q&A with Tropicalia writer Vaughn Glover.
